5.0 out of 5 stars The last cutting board you will ever need I love watching cooking shows, and what sticks out to me is never the food, it’s the tools they use! The appliances, the utensils, kitchenware, etc. I absolutely love seeing large cutting boards. A friend of mine showed me a cutting board that had been made by their grandfather and has been passed down to them. The thing is decades old and still looks amazing! Imagine all the meals made on it decades before and up to this day? A beautiful piece of history for that family. This is also what I wanted, the last cutting board I will ever buy and pass down to the ones after me. A couple hours of research, I grew tired. Nearly gave up. I found that large, and good quality cutting boards were really out of my price range. Anywhere from $200-$300+. I believe in getting what you paid for, but that was too much. I desired a large cutting board for functionality, long standing use, and as a show piece in my kitchen.I took to Amazon for further research and came upon Sonder’s cutting board. They have many sizes and styles to choose from but Highland is what I set on. I had a budget of $100 so this was right around that.I eagerly awaited delivery, my husband can confirm I ran to the door when it arrived but I should’ve let him get it this time cause boy was it heavy.First impression: It came beautifully and safely packaged, I may just keep the packaging in case I ever move again. Tips for care and inspiration for the board names are included, which this former Los Angeles resident appreciates very much. As a millennial, I am huge in nostalgia, what can I say?Second impression: woah, this is heavy. I am used to much more light weight and smaller cutting boards (which are frustrating to use, I have broken one in half before). This tells me I am dealing with some nice solid wood here.Third impression: finally! I have found it. The last cutting board I will ever buy. I will be oiling it soon and will report back if any mishaps but otherwise I am confident in this well made product.I will still keep the smaller ones around for when I’m chopping up veggies for lunch so it won’t replace them entirely but this one is good to use for those larger than usual jobs. It’s big enough, thick enough, and the juice grooves will help catch anything leaking out which is super helpful for those shredded chicken tacos I make.I do want to note that this company is more than happy to help you with any inquiries you may have regarding this product. They are really accessible which I appreciate. It makes me feel better to know someone cares enough to seek feedback and provides information on how to use and care for this investment, because that is what this is for me. This brand also carries other sizes in price ranges that fit smaller budgets and needs.Variation: Color: Highland | Teak | Edge Grain
5.0 out of 5 stars It's big, It's heavy, it's wood. It's better than bad, it's good. This is now my 5th board from Sonder LA. My first board “Alfred” was so perfect and of such quality I fell in love with Sonder LA. My second and greatly less expensive board was “Winsome”. A few issues with the workmanship, I’m excessively picky about everything, alas I decided I’d sand out the problem areas and place it into service. It’s also a very lovely board. The other 2 boards “Doheny Duo” I consider my everyday constant use boards. These are going to be severely punished over the next few years as they are the right size to pull out chop up whatever and toss to the side. I bring up these other boards to attest to the love I’ve found for this small company. Not to sell you on any specific board. Now enters this absolute powerhouse “Highland” Wow I can’t believe how much I adore this board. I watch Americas Test Kitchen and Cooks Country and was looking at these behemoth boards they used in their prep stations. I decided I needed one of my own in my tiny kitchen. I checked the dimensions and decided this is the board I needed. When It arrived I had no Idea what was in that huge box. I opened it to find the box inside wasn’t much smaller than the outer box. I opened the inner box assuming there was several inches of padding that took up some of that box. Nope, just enough to keep the animals that jump on packages from doing any damage. Man alive was I shocked, even after measuring” how big this bad boy is. When placed on my stove top it almost, but not quite, covers the entire top. This Is going to be my perfect prep area.I can not express how perfect it is. The weight is heavy enough so movement will never be an issue, but still manageable for cleaning, well I assume that I’ll be fighting it into the sink that’s smaller than it is. As for storage? I’m thinking it will be living on the counter top. Mostly because I have no where to put it, but kinda because I want people to see it in all it’s glory. This is some serious next level kitchen equipment here, and would have been a bargain at double the cost. (Please don’t double the cost). My conclusion is Sonder LA makes a quality product and it’s name is “Highland”. If you’re on the fence find their web page and read away. Send them a message or 2. They will answer. They even engaged me and my crazy line of questioning. Ask them about “Vincent”. The only dead link I found on the site. I want a board called “Vincent” mostly because it’s not available at the time of this review.Solid company, solid boards, solid choice. I put my money where my mouth is. I say go for it.I wasn’t paid anything for this review. Seriously who would pay for this? Oh oh oh. I just though of one issue with these boards. Good quality cutting board oil doesn’t come in 55 gallon drums. But that’s more of an issue with Walrus Oil ,check them out here on Amazon, than Sonder LA.Cheers, Bill and WendeVariation: Color: Highland | Teak | Edge Grain
5.0 out of 5 stars Big, Heavy, Strong, Beautiful I like this cutting board! It’s beautifully built and is nice for cutting meats. I read the FAQs on their website about using mineral oil and not using serrated blades. The case that it comes in is heavy duty and can be used for temporary storage if needed. Be sure you get the right size for you. I got the biggest one and was able to lay on a large steak, salt, and beverage right on the board. The blood groove is deep and worked perfectly. The meat juice cleaned off nice when I washed it. Walrus Oil is arriving tomorrow via Amazon to keep it looking new. It’s a thick board and this big one requires strength! I love it. Watch videos on oiling the board.Variation: Color: Highland | Teak | Edge Grain
5.0 out of 5 stars Solid, beautiful, well-made cutting board I do a lot of home cooking as a hobby – including making my own bread, homemade pizza, and smoking foods on my outdoor green egg, etc. After years putting up with cheapo plastic cutting boards and bamboo models that would eventually warp and fall apart I decided I needed something more suited to my needs. I ordered this one model and went with the biggest size that would fit my countertop space so that I’d have the workspace that I wanted. I’ve gotta say this is one of the best kitchen purchases I’ve made in a long time. So far I’ve used it to fold and kneed dough, slice pizza from our backyard oven, and it will easily fit any large size smoked meat cut like brisket or a rib rack etc. Bonus is that one side also has a large juice moat so I won’t get my countertop dirty when I slice meats later too. Some of the things I like about it in particular: 1) the weight especially – it doesn’t move around when I work on it which allows me to make more aggressive cuts without worrying about cutting myself 2) the handles on the side for easily moving it 3) it’s beautiful 4) the moat on one side which I mentioned earlier. 5) if you keep your knives sharp there will be be marks after you cut, but that’s a GOOD thing since it means that the board is doing its job protecting your knives…and after a maintenance mineral oil application the marks largely vanish. One thing to be aware of is that due to this version’s size it could be a little awkward to fit into your sink for cleaning, it makes it easier if you have a detachable sink wand from your faucet…or what I do is just try and wipe it with a damp towel or cloth instead of sink washing it whenever possible.Variation: Color: Highland | Teak | Edge Grain
5.0 out of 5 stars Nice block, was a gift for hubby! Good board, size is perfect.Got for hubby for Christmas as he was always complaining about our bamboo chopping block as it’s not as big as he’d like, and he loves to cook. Now we can both cook together without “swapping places”.On the other hand, this one is much nicer looking than the one we have, so he’s giving it the white glove treatment 😬 and not using it for everything. But it looks great on our counter!Seems well made. We’ll see if it lasts “many years” or not, but I would recommend it as a gift or just to have. It’s pretty heavy too.I wish it could’ve had option to engrave a name or phrase onto one edge, that would be cool. I didn’t want the name engraved or etched on the actual face of the board, as I liked the smoother look, without too many bells and whistles. But that would’ve been a nice touch, onto one side of it, where it’s not in the way of any function of the cutting board itself. Was shipped fast and with care, and hubby was surprised. 👍🏼Variation: Color: Highland | Teak | Edge Grain
5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the counter. Love this cutting board. I especially like the video telling and showing how to care for it by using a specific oil. The board does offer other ways to use it. Right now, I am using it to arrange cheese, bite sized veggies and meats. It is so pretty, I haven’t cut on it yet.Variation: Color: Highland | Teak | Edge Grain
5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty and durable. This is a large and heavy cutting board. I bought it for when we are smoking brisket. Plenty of room for trimming and slicing. Have not had any problems with warping or cracking. Just remembered to oil regularly and it looks good as new. Beautiful grain and color. Gets lots of compliments when we have friends over when BBQing or smoking meats. A great investment.Variation: Color: Highland | Teak | Edge Grain
